Anyone who has watched a young child open Christmas presents knows there is no predicting which gift will be the favourite. Sometimes it is the toy everyone searched for. Sometimes it is the empty cardboard box the toy came in.

That is part of the joy of Christmas. Children live in the moment, and they should. But parents and grandparents also know what often happens next. The must-have present is played with constantly for a few weeks, moves to a shelf by spring, and makes a final appearance at a car boot sale before the year is out.

What if, alongside the presents chosen for *this* Christmas, we gave one that was chosen for Christmases still to come?

For some families, that could mean giving a small gold coin each year. A Sovereign or another coin might be slipped into a stocking with a note recording the date, the child’s age and a few words from the person who gave it. The child may be far more interested in the cardboard box at first. That is perfectly all right. The gift is waiting for them to grow into it.

One coin becomes two, then five, then ten. Over the years, the collection marks more than its weight in gold. It marks Christmas mornings, childhood milestones and the people who were there to celebrate them. The handwritten notes may one day be treasured every bit as much as the coins.

I think that is why the idea appeals particularly to grandparents. Many would like to give something that will still be there when a grandchild is grown: something they can hold in their hand, remember receiving and perhaps pass on again. It is a way of saying, “I was thinking about your future, even while we were enjoying today.”

There is no need to make it a grand gesture. A tradition should fit comfortably within what a family can afford, and it need not involve a purchase every single year. What matters is the thought and the continuity. A coin kept carefully with a personal note tells a different story from money transferred into an account and forgotten.

Nor does it need to become a lesson about markets on Christmas morning. In time, it might open a conversation about saving, the value of physical ownership and what we choose to keep. For now, it can simply be a gift given with love.

Anyone buying physical gold should be clear about the price they are paying, how they will store it safely and how it could be sold in future. Its value can rise and fall. The reason to begin a family tradition should be a considered choice, rather than a bet on what gold will cost next Christmas.

There will always be room under the tree for toys, books and gadgets. They make the day. But one small gift, chosen to be kept rather than replaced, might still be bringing back those Christmas mornings decades from now.

Some gifts are made to be enjoyed today. Others are made to be treasured for a lifetime.
